Ortodoksiset Hautajaiset
The Eastern Orthodox funeral service is a beautiful way to celebrate the life of a loved one who has passed away. The service is which is performed on the third day after death according to Orthodox tradition. This is a reminder of the hope imparted by the resurrection of Christ and the belief that death is not the end, but rather a transition towards eternal life. The use of white, the symbol of victory, and the emphasis on the deceased’s final journey to the eternal life emphasize the spiritual nature of the funeral service.
The casket is placed in the center of the church with the deceased facing the altar. An icon of Christ may be placed on the chest of the deceased, which is then buried with them. A ribbon is placed on the forehead, symbolizing the heavenly wreath of victory.
During the service, members of the procession carry candles, and about halfway through, the priest urges those in attendance to say their final goodbyes to the deceased. This is a deeply moving moment, as people approach the open casket to make the sign of the cross, kiss the icon, or simply bow before the deceased.
After the final goodbyes, a cloth is placed on the face of the deceased and the priest uses consecrated dust to draw a cross on their chest as a reminder of our human frailty and mortality. The burial service is a powerful reminder of the reality of death, but also of the hope of eternal life.
